Opening statements to begin in Trump's historic criminal trial

What takes place today: Opening statements in the former president's criminal trial for hush money in New York are scheduled for this morning. Six alternates and the entire 12-person jury were selected last week. Find out more about them by reading this.
First person present: Following opening remarks, the district attorney's office will summon David Pecker, the former National Enquirer publisher, as its first witness, a source said. He is said to have facilitated the agreement with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Concerning the case: Trump was accused of participating in a hush money plot to stifle critical information prior to the 2016 election, and he was charged with 34 felonies last year for fabricating business records. Trump entered a not guilty plea.
What's in jeopardy: As he campaigns for president once more, Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges. He is being tried on four different counts. If found guilty, he might have to serve time in jail in this, possibly the only case tried by a jury before the election.
